Writing, source and split view

Folora has three editor modes: Writing edits the typeset document directly, Source edits the Markdown source, and Split view shows both side by side, with changes on one side synced to the other.

Switch modes

Choose Writing, Source or Split view under Editor mode in the toolbar. You can also switch from the View menu or the command palette. There is no keyboard shortcut for switching modes.

Each tab remembers its own mode. Switching modes does not rewrite the Markdown; for a file you have not edited, saving leaves its bytes and modification time unchanged.

Scrolling in split view

Clicking a passage on one side scrolls the other side to the matching position and highlights it briefly. Scroll both sides together in split view in Settings is on by default; scrolling one side scrolls the other with it.

Notes

  • Documents over 1 million characters or 2,000 top-level blocks can be edited only in source view. See Large files.
  • For documents with front matter, footnotes and similar syntax, see Raw blocks in writing view.
  • In blocks you edit in writing view, Markdown markup and whitespace are normalized to a consistent style; blocks you do not edit stay as they are. A whole list or a whole table counts as one block.
  • Text files that are not Markdown, such as .txt files, open only in source view.
