Autosave and recovery

Autosave is on by default and writes changes to the file every 1.5 seconds after you edit. To turn it off, click ⋯ (Document details) at the right end of the status bar and deselect Autosave.

An untitled document has no file location yet, so it is not written to disk automatically. When you press ⌘S to save it for the first time, Folora suggests a file name from the first line.

Recovery log

Every edit is recorded in Folora’s recovery log before it is written to the file, including edits to untitled documents. If Folora or the computer quits unexpectedly:

  1. Open Folora again. The notification bar shows “Recovery copies: N”.
  2. Click the Restore button that carries the file name, for example Restore Notes.md. The button also shows the time of the last edit. The content opens as an untitled copy and does not overwrite the original file.
  3. Compare it with the file on disk, then decide whether to save it.

Notes

  • On a force quit, input from the last brief moment may not be recorded.
  • After a document is saved, its recovery records are cleared.
  • If the file was changed externally while Folora also has unsaved changes, autosave pauses. See External changes and conflicts.
  • If the file has been deleted, autosave does not recreate it.
  • Saving keeps file permissions but not extended attributes, ACLs or hard links.
